Writers, poets, artists, poseurs. Communists, Socialists, Zionists, Bundists. Emigrés, habitués, bohemians, cosmopolites. Critics, hacks, scribblers, gossip-mongers. Yeshiva dropouts, shtetl burnouts, circus entertainers, cabaret artists. Between worlds and between wars. Café Cosmopole is a musical theatre pastiche with original music by the Yiddish songwriting duo Tsvey Brider, set to the texts of an international group of 20th-century Yiddish poets and writers. Set in the interwar café scenes of Berlin, Odessa, and Warsaw, the piece explores the lives and thoughts of the denizens of these cafés.
