This lecture-concert evening addresses everyone curious to know more about this year's theme, “The Weimar Republic of Yiddishland.” A Yiddish Republic – what’s that? And what does it have to do with the Weimar Republic, the centennial of which we are celebrating this summer?
Quite a lot, as Dr. Diana Matut will explain in her lecture on the political and cultural ferment of the 1920s and 30s, as experienced in the – politically virtual, but culturally very real – Republic of Yiddishland. As Dr. Matut – a Jewish Studies scholar and Yiddishist known for her free and captivating style – will show, the achievements of those years, which were characterized by strong feelings of confidence and hope for the future, amounted to nothing less than a revolution. The second part of the evening will feature the new program by the California-based Yiddish music group Veretski Pass with Joel Rubin, entitled “The Maggid Chronicles.” In this project, the world-renowned ensemble demonstrates yet again its creative use of ethnographic material – a theme that will figure prominently in the workshops and concerts of YSW 2019. Sofia Maggid (1892-1954) was a folklorist and ethnomusicologist whose research and recordings from 1920s and 30s Belarus and Ukraine constitute one of the most important existing collections of Yiddish music. Incorporating material from this collection, Veretski Pass with Joel Rubin has created a mesmerizing program that reflects Maggid's formidable achievements and throws light on the world of Yiddish-speaking women during the prewar period.
We look forward to seeing you at this exciting and inspiring YSW goes Erfurt 2019 opening event!
