Benjy Fox-Rosen (USA/AT; double bass)
Benjy Fox-Rosen (Los Angeles, 1984) is a singer, bassist and composer based in Vienna. He is music director of the Vienna Stadttempel Choir that accompanies Cantor Shmuel Barzilai every week. As a Yiddish singer and bass player, Fox-Rosen has performed at Celebrate Brooklyn, the Chicago World Music Festival, Wiener Festwochen and the Krakow Jewish Festival, as well as many other festivals and venues throughout the Americas and Europe. He has taught Yiddish music at KlezKamp, KlezKanada, the New England Conservatory, Yiddish Summer Weimar and numerous events in Romania and Moldova, where he studied as a Fulbright scholar in 2012-2013. He has been commissioned to compose music for choir as well as artistic interventions and audio-installations; he has also produced two CDs of his own music, both of which were included in the Forward’s top five Jewish music albums of the year. Most recently, his composition Nitl iz a beyzer layd (Christmas is a Wicked Burden, 2018) was premiered by Ensemble Wiener Collage at the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna.
